First of all I want to say how incredibly happy I am that I met this wonderful couple, Rhiannon and Nick! We all had such a good time at their in-home engagement session late last fall and I can’t wait for their upcoming wedding in October! I decided to do something a little different for this post and ask the couple to share a bit of their personal love story which eventually led to an epic proposal on a trip to Iceland! So before I get into some details about the engagement session here in Columbus, Ohio, here is their story told in their own words:
“How we met”
We wish we could remember the specific date that we were matched and the specific date that we had our first meeting, but… we both suck… so all we know is that it was November of 2015 (around Thanksgiving time). Ashley (Nick’s older sister) had asked Nick previously if she could set him up with one of her Co-workers at the James Cancer Hospital (where Rhiannon was working at the time). Nick, being the easy going dude that he is, went along with this. A couple weeks later, coming towards the end of a long shift at the James, Rhiannon was charting at a computer when one of the nurses leaned over to her and asked “Are you single?” Very confused, Rhiannon said “yes…” and the nurse responded by yelling out “Hey Ashley! Rhiannon’s single!” Ashley popped her head around the corner of the nurses station and excitedly asked, “Want to see a picture of my brother?!” Rhiannon thus spent the rest of her breaks that day with Ashley showing her pictures of Nick and grilling her to make sure she was a good fit (mind you, she was texting a hesitant Nick who was concerned about the 4.5 year age difference). A couple weeks later, Nick and Rhiannon were meeting over a (as Nicks says…) “very expensive dinner” at Third and Hollywood (which he continues to give Rhiannon grief about consistently). After then proceeding to become best friends by having weekly dates over Cane’s Chicken, the rest is history.
Jumping ahead, here’s an image from their engagement session at their home back in Columbus. A little foreshadowing perhaps?
“Our engagement story”
The summer of 2019, we had planned a European vacation to visit Rhiannon’s dad while he was doing research in Ireland. This is when Nick came up with the wonderful idea to use this vacation as the perfect opportunity to ask Rhiannon is she would spend the rest of her life with him. The trip consisted of a short stop over in Iceland (after which they would continue on to Ireland and England). Nick’s original plan was to propose at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, but the more he thought about it and the closer it got to vacation, he decided to “call an audible!” On their second day in Iceland, Nick took Rhiannon to the Blue Lagoon (for a relaxing Spa Day) a romantic meal at the Lagoons Restaurant, and then lastly to visit the only hot spring in Reykjavik. **Just as an added bonus, Nick found a Cat Cafe that morning for breakfast—this made the day even more memorable (as anyone who knows Rhiannon knows that she is a major cat lover!) ** On the way to the only hot spring in Reykjavik, Rhiannon was unfortunately feeling car sick and it also was beginning to rain. Nick began to get super nervous that he may not be able to get her out of the car to go see the hot spring he planned to propose in front of. Lucky for him, the skies actually cleared, Rhiannon was feeling good, and he was able to get down on one knee! Obviously, Rhiannon said “Yes!” and Iceland became forever a special place for both of them. The rest of the vacation was a wonderful two week celebration that is unforgettable.
Below is a selfie from the day he asked and she said yes, and a photo of the exact location where the proposal took place!
Pretty cute, right? Now just ahead a bit for their engagement session! Despite how much I enjoy them, it’s not often that couples request doing their sessions at home. With a house this cute though, how could you not? It’s so sweet and full of character!
Now if you read their story above, you’ll already know that Rhiannon is a cat lover so OF COURSE we had to include their adorable kitty, Oatmeal! I’ve done lots of portrait sessions with dogs, but actually this is one of probably only a few that have included cats. I’m so glad they did! Though I’m probably more of a dog-person, cats and their often aloof and fiercely independent personalities make me laugh. Oatmeal might actually run this household, as our beloved pets often do!
Look at that cutie! Just making sure he got his own dedicated camera time in!
While I loved their entire home, I especially adored this little corner by the window upstairs in their bedroom.

I love all the cute touches in their kitchen. The quirky little animals are my fave!
After spending most of the shoot inside their home, we stepped out for a bit to grab some photos on their front porch and go for a short walk around their neighborhood.
Thanks again to this awesome couple for sharing your story with me and trusting me with capturing your memories. Looking forward to your big day this fall!
